Saturday, July 05, 2008 Overall Run/Heiskell Hollow A A challenging 10 mile hike, with 2500 feet uphill climb, to the highest waterfalls in Shenandoah Park. We will ascend the Heiskell Hollow and Weddlewood Trails, have lunch overlooking Overall Falls, and descend on the Overall Run/Tuscarora Trail. Saturday, July 12, 2008 Reston Pathway Hike D Join us on this 3 mile hike through Reston. This high tech town was one of the first planned communities (large-scale, mixed-land-use developments that have socially diverse populations and conform to a single master plan) in the Nation. See for yourself how successful the planners were in mixing nature with other types of land use. The extensive paved and unpaved pathways that connect all of Reston are one of its major assets. Saturday, July 12, 2008 Maryland AT # 2 A Starting from Harper’s Ferry, this 10-mile hike heads north, crosses the Potomac, then follows the C&O Canal south to Weverton Cliffs. There we’ll climb to the top for a pleasant ridge walk to Gathland State Park. Total elevation gain is about 1500 feet. Car shuttle required. Saturday, July 19, 2008 Whiteoak Canyon A This is a circuit hike of about 9 miles through two of the deepest and steepest ravines in the Shenandoah National Park. The trail passes six waterfalls as it ascends White Oak Canyon for an elevation gain of 2300 feet. Return will be via Cedar Run. Optional swim near end of hike. Park entry fee is $8/person. Sunday, August 03, 2008 Woodstock Tower A Starting at Powells Fort Camp, we will hike approximately 12 miles with about 1000 feet of elevation gain. At the start, we will climb Doll Ridge, (approximately 600 feet of elevation gain). The rest of the hike will be mostly a comfortable ridge walk along the Massanutten Trail to Woodstock Tower with its commanding 360 degree view. Saturday, August 09, 2008 Canoe Trip - Shenandoah River C This is a 12 mile canoe trip on the beautiful South Fork of Shenandoah River. During the trip we will picnic and swim and take as long as we like. We will have 2 people per canoe. Cost is $30/person and will be paid to the leader the day of the trip. Non-members add $2. Saturday, August 09, 2008 Doyles River Trail B Hike 8.4 miles at a moderate pace along the east slope of the Blue Ridge. We will see waterfalls along Doyles River and Jones Run. Visit Browns Gap, which General Stonewall Jackson's troops used during the Civil War's Valley Campaign to make raids into the Shenandoah Mountains. Three stream-crossings, if the water is high, poles are nice but not essential. Elevation gain 1800'. Saturday, August 16, 2008 Little Crease Mountain B We take Veach Gap Trail to the Tuscarora Trail/Massanutten Trail, which we follow north to the ridge of Little Crease Mountain and the spectacular views of the twists and turns of the south fork of the Shenandoah River. At the junction with Sherman Gap Trail, we turn left to descend to the Botts Trail and follow it to the Elizabeth Furnace day use picnic parking area. The length of the hike is approximately 8.2 miles with 1,100' of elevation gain, and one long, steep downhill. A short car shuttle is required. Sunday, September 07, 2008 Roaring Run and Bird Knob Trails A This 10 mile hike begins at Catherine Furnace and follows the Roaring Run Trail up and over Big Mountain to the Massanutten South Trail, Bird Knob Trail, and again Massanutten South Trail to the now-closed Massanutten Visitor Center. A small lake about midway in the hike offers both an opportunity for a cooling dip and a pretty spot for lunch. The hike is 2,000 feet of elevation gain; there is one long climb, and one steep rocky downhill. Short car shuttle required.
